HOW WE CURATE DATA
ARCHIVE TRAINING MANUAL
STANDARDS AND TOOLS
Using a set of established standards and tools can help accelerate the development of a fledgling data archive.
Rather than focusing on a particular functional area of activity, this section of the Manual is an index of useful standards and tools for new data archives. Social science data archiving is well established internationally, and many such standards and tools have emerged from the field and found wide adoption. Reusing tools can help fledgling archives save valuable time and resources, while standards provide models to bring them in line with the state of the art.
Currently this section primarily reflects standards and tools used by the UK Data Archive, but will in time be expanded to include recommendations from other CESSDA archives.
Data archives use a variety of internationally recognised standards, many of which are community-driven.

Data archives use both community and bespoke tools for workflow management, data processing activities, data acquisition and access, and for external and internal communications.
