New Head of IDP at the UK Data Archive

The UK Data Archive is delighted to announce the appointment of John Shepherdson to the senior position of Head of Information Development and Programming (IDP), a role which he will take up on 4 January 2010. John Shepherdson

John joins the Archive from a career at British Telecom’s research facility at Adastral Park in Ipswich. His most recent position was as Research Group Leader at the Intelligent Systems Research and Innovation Centre, where he built and managed the Group’s annual research programme. John has an M.Sc. in Artificial Intelligence and is internationally acknowledged as an expert on multi-agent systems and wireless applications for virtual teams. He has extensive technical and leadership experience, has managed numerous projects and has been a finalist in the British Computer Society awards for the last two years.

John will lead the strategic development and management of the Archive’s information development section which provides development support to all services carried out within the Archive. This includes both outward-facing applications which allow the finding and accessing of data and other resources and internal systems which allow the Archive to curate social science data. He will lead the programming team and have responsibility for senior oversight of all software development, implementation and maintenance. He will join the Archive’s Policy Group as one of the four Associate Directors.

A Yorkshire man by birth, John has lived in Sudbury for nearly twenty years and among other activities is a Governor of Tudor Primary School, a keen follower of international rugby and smitten by off-road cycling (in the dark!).
