New publications on data management

Article dated: 4 December 2009

A new edition of the popular Managing and Sharing Data: a best practice guide for researchers is now available. This second edition, described by funders JISC as a timely and important publication, incorporates feedback from various stakeholders, as well as more cross-disciplinary case studies.

The UK Data Archive has also produced a new information leaflet for Research Ethics Committees (RECs)- Data Sharing vs Data Protection - which explains how social science research data can be shared ethically and how RECs and researchers can address data sharing issues during ethical reviews. The guidance was developed in collaboration with members of the UK Universities Research Ethics Committees Forum.

A third new publication, Managing and Sharing Data: a guide for ESRC researchers, will be included in the information pack for all new ESRC award holders. It provides basic guidance on data management, details the practicalities of depositing data with ESDS and points award holders towards key data management guidance and training events.

All these initiatives form part of a drive to increase engagement with ESRC researchers on data management planning. With two new team members soon to join the Research Data Management Support team at the UK Data Archive in 2010, the future looks bright and promises more data management guidance to come.
