The team has been busy with its outreach programme in the last few months, with workshops at the University of Surrey, the University of Southampton, and for Office for National Statistics staff at their office in Titchfield. At Southampton a different workshop format involved significant one-to-one assistance for participants from experts in census data and geographical referencing. Longitudinal data, migration, and health and mortality are to be the topics for the further workshops at Essex, Belfast and Cardiff during this academic year. census image

Following 2 years of successful Festival of Social Science events the team organised a ‘Social Science Challenge!’ on 16 March 2010 for around 60 pupils from local schools and sixth forms, and funded again by the ESRC. The event both informed and entertained in communicating the importance of the social sciences and covered topics such as statistical probability. Dr Todd Landman, human rights expert at the University of Essex by day, and metaphysical magician by night, was the celebrity question master and entertainer. Colin Riordan, Vice Chancellor of the University of Essex, and Professor Kevin Schürer, Director of the UK Data Archive, presented the prizes on the day. Finally, the team has been closely following the progress of plans for the 2011 Census. Links to the current consultations being undertaken by the census agencies can be found on the web site.
