The Preparatory Phase Project for a major upgrade of the Council of European Social Science Archives (CESSDA) research infrastructure came to a formal end on 30 June 2010. CESSDA

In July and August, the project office team at the UK Data Archive were busy finalising the many reports coming out of this project, including:

  • readiness assessment of Eastern European and Baltic States archives seeking to join CESSDA
  • training needs for social science and humanities data providers
  • technical report and recommendations for developing the research infrastructure’s data portal, including a question databank
  • report and recommendations for adopting metadata standards for data ingest, preservation and dissemination
  • recommendations on formats for social science and humanities data preservation
  • availability of official statistics for research use
  • requirements for inclusion of qualitative material into the CESSDA research infrastructure

As anticipated, the work has highlighted significant differences in the range of services and capacities of the archives that constitute CESSDA. For this reason, much work will need to be done during the construction phase of the new European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC).

The documents and the future of the upgraded CESSDA research infrastructure are now in the hands of CESSDA's funders, whose task it is to turn this vision into reality.
