Applying the JISC Identity Management Toolkit

Article dated: 01-Feb-11

The UK Data Archive will be testing the JISC Identity Management Toolkit in the complex environment of a major service provider.

This project, which forms part of JISC's Access and Identity Management Programme, will examine the UK Data Archive's current identity management (IdM) processes using the JISC Identity Management Toolkit. The Toolkit is designed to support Higher and Further Education (HE/FE) institutions by providing guidance on how to set up IdM systems from both policy and technical perspectives.

The Archive works with existing identity providers in the HE/FE sector and acts as a virtual 'orphanage' identity provider for users outside of this community. The Toolkit, which held identify gaps and audit processes, will be tested in the mixed and complex IdM environment of the Archive in its role as a key data service provider.

The work aims to both inform improvements to IdM at the Archive, but also to deliver benefits for the Archive's user communities - data owners, users and the wider academic community - by showcasing the effectiveness and applicability of the JISC Toolkit.
