Freedom of information: do you know your rights and responsibilities?

Article dated: 25 February 2011

Recent high-profile cases surrounding the disclosure of climate change data have highlighted the importance of reconciling research interests with the public right to access information.

As creators of information, academic researchers need to be aware of their legal responsibilities with regard to allowing access to their research outputs. For this reason, colleagues at the Research Information Network (RIN) have organised a series of three regional workshops on Freedom of Information legislation and how it specifically affects higher education researchers.

Workshop dates:

  • 22 March 2011 at the University of Manchester
  • 1 April 2011 at University College London
  • 12 April at Strathclyde University, Glasgow

These events will provide an opportunity for researchers to learn more about the existing legislation, share their practices and concerns, and identify appropriate information and support for higher education researchers.

All three workshops are free and researchers who use ESDS data are encouraged to attend.
